May 2009:
What's in a name? I'm thinking about one of my favorite quotes of all
time, from A League of Their Own, where Mae Mordabito, the flamboyant,
flirty baseball player says to reporters, "Hi, my name's Mae, and that's
more than a name, that's an attitude." Seventeen years later and it
still cracks me up. Southern names seem to have a special affinity for
Mays. PDX dog rolls include Sadie May, Gracie May, several iterations of
Maggie May, Ida May, Daisy Mae, Sally Mae, and just plan May. But true
to Southern two-name tradition, the Belles will not be outdone by the
Mays: there's Sally Bell, Clara Belle, Lillie Bell, Annabell, Isabelle,
then there are 4 Belles, and 11 Bellas. Sometimes we just tack on Bell
for the heck of it, as in Copper Bell and Beka Bell. I must admit,
though, that my favorite names are the ones we don't see too often. It
takes a certain something to name your dog Peeve, Terror, Klepto,
Vandal, or Sickem. Still, my favorite of all time was the man who
checked into the Puppy Head Start class with his baby Boxer, Costly.
Here's to hoping we see some sun one fine day soon. In the meantime,
I'll try to take pictures in between the thunderstorms! -- Bev
